Cartoon Caption Contest good for the brain

Have you ever seen a caption contest offered by the larger news papers ? I found these addicting contests a few moths ago. I did the first one strictly for fun. Before I knew it I was entering every one I could find. Sometimes it took me hours to come up with my lines. Other times the picture seemed to speak to me and I could have five lines in a few minutes. It wasn't long before I noticed a difference in my health. I am not referring to my physical health I am referring to my mental health. I was able to come up with answers to questions more quickly . I even found spelling was easier. I decided to do a little research on games that involved the mind. To my surprise there was a lot of information on this subject. Apparently , I was not exercising my mind. I watched TV , I also did what I had to for the day on my computer . But , I was not really doing much of anything that required thinking . I guess you could say my brain was turning to TV mush. Cartoon caption contests were not only fun for me , it helped exercise my brain , but more importantly , kept my mind off of my chronic pain. This gave me an idea. I have a brother who draws cartoons who is also always entering these addicting contests . Together, we came up with our own cartoon contest. He enjoys drawing cartoons and I enjoy cooking. So with those two things in mind the food service cartoons were born. He has finished 10 cartoons in a few short days. Which gave me yet another idea, an adventure comic book about the mishaps of cooking. My brother has been agoraphobic for several years now. It was really hard watching a vibrant man go deeper into a hole. I have seen him change through this process. He is happier now drawing than I have seen him in years. I never thought entering a caption contest would lead to all of this but it did. So I am guessing our new addiction is a good one , for once. This has made my brother and I have a even stronger bond and for that I am grateful. If you would like to see what we are working on or even give your guess on our first caption contest ever stop by. I will post his cartoon drawing on my hub. Thank you for listening .

There is definitely something to be said for the benefits of exercising the mind. I have heard that even just counting to 100 by threes everyday can help increase mental capacity.

Wow, I never heard that before. I can see how counting would also help stimulate the mind . I would have never given mind exercise a second thought , until I saw a huge change in how fast I responded to questions ask to me after doing these contests for a few weeks. I never relized that I was losing my quickness by not reading. I am most pleased for my brother. He has really made changes. Something as simple as the cartoon caption contest in the Denver post. Has made him have to learn how to navigate the web to place his entries. Now that he is drawing again, he seems so happy. I was not really sure how to share this without making it to long, so I am happy you got it.
